We’d love to be able to give you a definite answer about which languages are going to guarantee success for your app, but we cannot. We can tell you from over five years experience which languages we recommend to most clients.

Every app is different

Before we begin, it is extremely important to stress that every app is different. We always recommend the start-small approach, whereby you localize into a few languages first before adding more later. It’s also possible to translate just your App Store Description and keywords first before moving on to the app, allowing you to test the waters and gain sales data before choosing to translate the rest of your app.

Our recommended list of first-time languages

  • Japanese
  • Simplified Chinese
  • Traditional Chinese
  • Korean
  • Russian
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Brazilian Portuguese
  • Italian
  • French
  • Arabic (especially if Android)

Some other tips

  • Social media apps tend to do well in Arabic speaking countries
  • Games, especially free, tend to do well in Chinese speaking markets
  • Don’t localize v.1 of your app unless you have to, always get your native language perfect first

We’d really appreciate it if you could rate this post to let us know how useful you found it! :) Thanks!
